who doesn't love trivia? when music is the theme, ain't nothin' gonna hold me down. oh no! this is right up my alley. so when my homegirl asked me to play with her team a few nights ago (apparently, they needed my rap/hip hop knowledge), i promptly replied "hellz yeah".
we felt like we were on a roll that fateful evening. "mustang sally" by wilson pickett, "ramble on" by led zepplin, someone on our team even got "baker street" by gerry rafferty (that dude was wearing a steely dan tshirt). then something perfectly normal happened: i screwed up. my homegirl and i high-fived (she probably didn't want to leave me hanging) when the track came on...you know, the whole song and dance. i was almost crying because i was so delighted to hear the epic jam of my junior high daze.
then it was time to swap answers with other teams. i began to recall that anxious feeling of a classmate scrutinizing my answers, mentally checking their own answers against mine. because, frankly, that is exactly what i was doing. i scanned an opponent's answers and discovered, after my song and dance and premature celebratory high fives, that i had answered too soon. to top it off, i heard the team checking our answers say "wow. that is a really good song though.".
it was, in fact, this jam which is "a really good song though."
